Process & sustainability

From discarded cloth to clean white fibre

A dry, mechanical process in five steps. It keeps textile waste out of landfill and puts cotton back on the spinning line without growing any new cotton.

Five steps

How recycled cotton fibre is made

  1. 01

    Source

Cutting waste from textile and garment factories and used clothing, purchased directly from the source.

  2. 02

    Sort

Material is graded by colour and composition before it is processed, so each lot runs consistently.

  3. 03

    Open

Garnetting machines open the fabric back into fibre. It is a dry, mechanical process.

  4. 04

    Clean and bale

Trash is removed and the fibre is pressed into 135–140 kg bales, ready to ship.

  5. 05

    Spin

Open-end spinners turn the fibre into yarn. We also supply open-end cotton yarn from Ne 6 to Ne 20.

The standard we work to

What the Global Recycled Standard checks

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is an international, voluntary, full product standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. Its goal is to increase the use of recycled materials in products and to reduce or eliminate the harm caused by their production.

  • Recycled content, verified by a third party
  • Chain of custody from our plant to the buyer
  • Social and environmental practice
  • Chemical restrictions

Vertex Cotton is a green initiative to utilise used clothing and textile waste to once again make cotton fibre, which is re-used to make cloth. It prevents the dumping of such waste in landfills and saves precious water and earth.
